k-osKevin Brereton (born February 20, 1972), better known by his stage name k-os (“chaos”), is a Canadian rapper, singer, songwriter and record producer. His given name may also be cited as Kheaven, a spelling he later adopted.

The alias “k-os” (spelled with a lower case “k”) is an acronym for “Knowledge of Self,” although in a later interview he also said that it used to stand for “Kheaven’s Original Sound.” When said thoroughly, it can say “chaos”. His music incorporates a wide variety of music genres including rap, funk, rock, and reggae. The lyrics frequently focus on promoting a “positive message” while at times expressing criticism of mainstream hip hop culture’s obsession with money, fame and glorification of violence.

A musician as well as a producer, k-os has written and produced nearly every part of all four of his albums. k-os usually performs with a live band, something that is uncommon in the hip hop genre. He sometimes plays guitar and keyboard both during live performances and in the studio.

k-os received his first musical exposure with the single “Musical Essence”, released in 1993. After the release of his second single “Rise Like the Sun” in 1996, he withdrew from the industry because he was dissatisfied with his musical style. He reappeared briefly in 1999 and released his debut album ”Exit” in 2002. The album received positive reviews but sold relatively few copies. He released his second album ”Joyful Rebellion” in 2004, which received platinum status in Canada. A third album, ”Atlantis: Hymns for Disco”, was released in 2006 and also went platinum. His most recent album, ”Yes!”, was released in 2009.

The StrumbellasSince the release of The Strumbellas’ eponymous 2009 EP, which was peppered with accolades from Toronto weeklies and prompted a proclamation from the CBC that they are a “band to watch,” the six-piece group has been slogging it out, earning their stripes through residencies at The Cameron House and most recently a month of SOLD OUT Home.Sweet.Home Tuesdays at The Dakota Tavern.  The band also left the proverbial nest in 2012, making new fans with two cross-country tours as well as playing a plethora of festivals including CMW, NXNE, Pop Montreal, Eaglewood and Hillside in Guelph, which by all accounts was the equivalent of their cotillion ball.

Conceived in Lindsay, Ont., but born in Toronto, The Strumbellas are equal parts small town dream and big city gumption. Sensitive singer-songwriters beware: this ain’t your meemaw’s country music. The band brings wheat field harmonies and arena-ready thunder to backrooms and festival stages alike. Folk wisp and country twang are nowhere to be found as The Strumbellas pound out a bluegrass-inspired indie rock that rivals punk and hardcore for sweat, blood, and ruckus.

The Strumbellas’ 2012 JUNO nominated debut album, My Father And The Hunter, offers a beautiful, harmonious dichotomy between melancholy heartbreak on songs. The album, which was produced by Cone McCaslin and recorded at Blue Rodeo’s coveted Woodshed Studio, is the harvest of talented friends, some whisky and a few rounds of euchre.  Harmonies, stomps, hollers, claps and gang vocals unabashedly abound as the songs weave compelling stories throughout the entire album.  Dance, cry, put your fist through a wall or call someone you love – expect to feel it all.

The group recently headed south of the border to record with West Coast producer Ryan Hadlock (The Lumineers, Metric, The Strokes, Gossip) at Bear Creek Studio near Seattle.

The Strumbellas: Simon Ward – vocals, acoustic guitar / David Ritter – piano, organ, percussion, vocals / Jeremy Drury – drums, percussion / Isabel Ritchie – violin, viola, vocals / Jon Hembrey – electric guitar, mandolin /Darryl James – bass.

Suzie McNeilSuzie McNeil is a seasoned performer who was first introduced to the world stage as the last woman standing in hit TV series Rockstar: INXS. Proclaimed by INXS as the best vocalist by INXS, she went on to record as a featured vocalist on INXS’ release Switch, toured with P!NK and has released four albums in Canada.

Her solid 2007 debut Broken & Beautiful, with the inspirational top 10 hit Believe, garnered her the 2008 Canadian Indie Award for Best New Pop Artist in addition to her nominations for a JUNO for Best New Artist and a two Canadian Music Awards. Her sophomore effort Rock-n-Roller was released in 2008 with hits like Let’s Go and Supergirl which reached number three on the charts.

Suzie had the honour of performing Believe at the Closing Ceremonies of the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, and also co-wrote the Athlete’s Tribute song. In May 2010 she released her third CD, Live Acoustic which captures her live performance while on tour with the legendary Colin James.

Suzie’s latest release Dear Love has produced three top 20 hits: Drama Queen, Tough Love and Love Can’t Save Us Now, as well as the smash hit Merry Go Round, which was in the top 10 for over 12 weeks.
